Teh Luh Lah
Learning and Healing Center
HISTORY AND PURPOSE
Established in 1996 Teh Luh Lah Learning and Healing Center is a community-based education and leadership development center. Every year, beginning in 1997, we have hosted an annual summer camp for approximately 40-50 youth. We work primarily with low income children from Chimayo and Espanola, New Mexico. The majority of the children range between the ages of seven to nineteen years old. Many of the children we serve come from rural and urban settings where drugs and violence are a daily part of their lives.
The goal of Teh-luh-lah is to help young people develop life skills to cope with the everyday stress of the communities from which they come. We work with the youth to build the leadership skills necessary for them to return to their communities and advocate on behalf of their needs. Teh-Luh-Lah enables a process that engenders equality, allows kids to try on a role of leadership and determine what it is they want to learn about. It creates an environment of safety, where the demands from adults are absent. Children have the opportunity to address real situations, to express their feelings about the life they are living, and to create the life that can be.
